1400–50; late Middle English colyndore,  perhaps (with nasalization) < Old Provençal colador  < Medieval Latin cōlātōrium,  equivalent to Latin cōlā ( re ) to strain (verbal derivative of cōlum  strainer) + -tōrium -tory2

Can be confused: calendar, calender, colander.
